Student Loans - The U.S. Department of Education has granted one last and final extension on the federal student loan forbearance. Jump down to the financial corner for more details!

Paracenteses - Don’t forget to get your paracentesis assessment forms filled out by your supervisor after performing them, and then turn them into the chiefs’ office (either at the VA or UC). Remember you need to perform 5 with direct observation and assessment to get signed off, and then one every 3 months to maintain certification. Scholarship Opportunities

Midwest Young Scholars in GIM Scholarship provides scholarships to support the registration fee to the 2021 SGIM Midwest Regional Virtual Meeting (October 7th & 8th) for residents.

Up to 5 scholarships are available this year. In addition to registration support, SGIM will offer 50% off a year of membership. The application site opens August 9, 2021 and will close on August 27, 2021 at 5pm CST. More details here.

Grant Opportunity -

Michael Jerkins, a UC Med-Peds grad, started a national bank for doctors including residents and fellows called Panacea Financial as well as the Panacea Financial Foundation.

The foundation is focused on strengthening the pipeline of ethnic and racial underrepresented minorities in medicine through scholarships to medical students and grants to residents and fellows.

Applications for the Resident/Fellow Grants opened 8/1/21 and closes on 9/30/21. Email Dr. Jerkins at michael.jerkins@panaceafinancial.com with any questions.

Caveat: we are not experts! This is a place where we share recent news, and tips/pearls we have learned during our journey. Please consult with an expert if uncertain prior to making any personal financial decisions.

Last week President Biden announced an extension of the student loan forbearance until January 31, 2022. This means that if you have federal student loans, they will not be due again until as early as February 1, 2022. There have been multiple extensions in the past 18 months, however in their announcement they made it clear this is the final definitive extension, so plan on payments resuming after this. If you have eligible federal student loans and are thinking about, but have not yet enrolled, in Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF), this is even more reason to enroll as soon as you can. You can find more information on PSLF at studentaid.gov: PSLF information.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

How do we compare applicants? This has been a growing conversation and led to the discussion about “distance traveled” as we know that classic metrics show only one piece of a much larger story.

The idea of “distance traveled” asks the following questions:

Where did a candidate begin their journey?

What hardship(s) have they overcome?

What perseverance was required to get here?

What structural and cultural barriers did they have to climb?
